Man fined after returning more than £10,000 in cash

You'd think that finding more than £10,000 in cash, in a bag next to a cash machine, and returning it to its rightful owners would be applauded. But for one man, all that it resulted in was a £300 fine.
Robert Adams, 54, saw the bag full of money next to a cash machine with Chase Bank's logo on the side. Instead of taking advantage, the resident of Arlington Heights, Illinois, returned it to the bank in question.
But he made a mistake, by giving police false information about exactly where he found it.
Adams found the large sum of cash on the night of 6 June while using an ATM inside the shop Walgreens. He had planned to meet a woman for a date, but when she failed to show decided to buy a drink before heading home.
Instead of handing in the money in the area where he found it, Adams took it to a police station nearer to his home where he said he felt more comfortable speaking to local police in familiar surroundings.
"I didn't want to go back into Walgreens, so I thought I would drive to the Chase Bank near my house and return it," he told the Southtown Star in the US.
But thinking it would result in fewer questions, Adams told the bank — and the police — that he'd found the money near his home not in the shop.
The error cost him $500 (£312).
Of course, leaving that sort of cash just lying about is a concern for any bank. So they, the security firm that lost the money and the police started to look into it. What they discovered was that Adams had lied about where he found the cash.
He was captured on CCTV picking up the money, leaving the shop and getting into his car, and then charged with lying in a police report — resulting in his fine.
"I accept the fine. I'm very sorry about this whole thing," Adams told the Chicago Tribune. He was never offered a reward for returning the cash.

Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed has told fans they can "go to hell" - or Chelsea - if they do not appreciate the new Michael Jackson statue at Craven Cottage.

Al Fayed, a close friend of the late performer, caused controversy after announcing he had decided to place the tribute to Jackson outside the Cottagers' stadium.

The statue was commissioned following Jackson's death in June 2009 and was due to be erected at Harrods before Al Fayed sold the Knightsbridge store.

"Why is it bizarre?," Al Fayed said after the unveiling. "Football fans love it. If some stupid fans don't understand and appreciate such a gift they can go to hell."

He added: "I don't want them to be fans. If they don't understand and don't believe in things I believe in they can go to Chelsea, they can go to anywhere else.

"People will queue to come and visit it from all over the UK and it is something that I and everybody else should be proud of."

Kit Symons played during Jackson's appearance against Wigan in 1999 and is now U18s manager at the Cottagers.

"It is great," he said. "The big thing is it is obviously something that the chairman feels very, very passionately about and he has decided to erect this statue and fair dos to him." Speaking on the time of Jackson's visit, he added: "It was just happy times. They were great times back then.

"The chairman obviously used to bring high-profile people down to the games.

"Tony Curtis was here a few weeks after and it was just fantastic times."

Rules of the road - lines you can and cannot park on
Finding a space in a town centre is a job in itself and avoiding rip-off multi-storey car parks is a must if you want to save cash.
But where you can leave your car and for how long can be confusing - and cheeky traffic wardens dine out on your bewilderment.
The Government has announced that new legislation will come into force in November to ban clamping on private land, so drivers can breathe a small sigh of relief, but there's still plenty of ambiguity about parking in public areas.
Just how long can you leave your car on a single yellow line for, and what does a red route really mean? We've scoured the Highway Code to reveal the facts so you don't have to find out the hard way.
Yellow linesIt's common knowledge that double yellow lines alongside a kerb mean no waiting at any time, but in some cases there are signs nearby indicating that you can park there at certain times of the day or year, so it's worth a look if you're desperate.
Single yellow lines are where the biggest source of ambiguity lies. According to the Highway Code, single yellows should be accompanied by a sign that displays when you can and can't park there. It's usually a case of no parking at peak times (i.e. between 8am and 6pm), but check the sign to be sure.
Red routesDouble and single red lines are a common sight on London's congested roads. Parking, unloading or even stopping for a second to let a passenger out are all strictly prohibited on roads with these along the side.
In a similar vein to a single yellow, a single red line will have a nearby sign that shows the times when the enforcements are more relaxed. Double reds should be avoided at all costs and at all times. The only exceptions to the rules are for licensed taxis and blue badge holders.
LoadingIf you need to park for a short period of time to load or unload the boot then look for yellow marks on the kerb. Two yellow marks mean no loading at any time, while one yellow mark means that you can load at certain times. Both markings should also have nearby signs that tell you whether and when you can stop to load there.
Specific loading bays are marked in white with the words LOADING ONLY displayed on the ground alongside the bay, so parking and walking away is not allowed. A white sign with a blue 'loading only' symbol will also be displayed nearby.
Other road markingsWhite zigzag lines mean you're near a zebra crossing and stopping on them is out of the question as you may obstruct the view of pedestrians crossing the road.
The same goes for yellow zigzag lines outside a school, which are usually accompanied by the words SCHOOL KEEP CLEAR in yellow.
Bus lanes and bus stops should be avoided for obvious reasons, and cameras to keep them free of anything but buses and taxis are now widespread, particularly in cities. A criss-cross yellow box means that you can't stop for any reason as you may obstruct other traffic and yellow box cameras are now very popular with city councils.
Some parking spaces are reserved for specific vehicles like doctors' cars or vehicles that belong to nearby businesses - such spaces are always marked, either on the road itself or with signs and, while you may or may not be fined for leaving your car in them, you'll almost certainly leave the locals a little peeved, which is never a good move.

Smoking should be banned in all cars as well as in public places where young people congregate, doctors are urging.
The Royal College of Physicians wants England's imminent review of anti-smoking laws to consider such measures to protect the young.
It says passive smoking results in 300,000 extra child visits to GPs in the UK every year for problems such as asthma and bacterial meningitis.
But driving and smoking lobby groups say cars are a "private space". = idiots / these people should be considered as pedo... right!
Wheezing
A number of medical bodies have supported a ban on smoking in cars transporting children, but the RCP goes a significant step further, urging a blanket ban on anyone lighting up in a vehicle - regardless of whether children or indeed any other passengers are inside. = very good.
It is calling for a two-pronged approach which would see children protected from second-hand smoke and shielded from the sight of adults smoking - whether in the playground or on the TV.
The RCP's report - Passive Smoking and Children - is being released ahead of the three-year review of the ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces in England. Similar bans have been introduced across the UK, with Scotland having led the way.
Drawing on a series of studies, the report suggests that in the UK, tens of thousands of youngsters are falling ill as a result of exposure to cigarette smoke.
Exclusion zones
These calculations include 20,000 chest infections, some 22,000 new cases of asthma and wheezing, as well as 200 cases of bacterial meningitis and 40 cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - or cot death.

Toyota staff memo on 'safety sacrifices' handed to US investigators

Toyota was forced yesterday to hand over to US congressional investigators a "smoking gun" memo produced by its own factory workers that warned management as far back as 2006 of systemic threats to car safety.
The two-page memo, drafted by a group of long-term Toyota employees and sent directly to Toyota’s thenpresident Katsuaki Watanabe in 2006, condemns "safety sacrifices" made by the company in pursuit of profit.
It highlights the inadequate development times for new vehicles and the general decline of craftsmanship at Japan’s most famous manufacturing company, concluding that vital processes were in the hands of "amateurs".
The document also offered a chilling foretaste of the calamity that was to come, warning that Toyota’s management policies would ultimately threaten the company’s survival.
Tadao Wakatsuki, the principal author of the memo, was interviewed by The Times two years ago, when he warned that Toyota’s expansionism was creating new victims: its employees were buckling under the burdens of cost-cutting and the customer was about to pay an unhappy price.
Mr Wakatsuki has worked on the floor of one of Toyota’s largest Japanese factories for 45 years. Along with several other employees both of Toyota and its subsidiaries, he set up a breakaway union in an attempt to improve working conditions throughout the group. His decision to form the All Toyota Labour Union, he said, was based on what he saw as the acquiescence of the official union – a body that rarely challenged management.
The Toyota Way is famous all over the world. In reality, the Toyota Way is to ignore warnings from within the firm, he said.
People work themselves to sickness because they are scared to do differently. Do you think that situation is good for the cars or the way they are built?
We used to do safety and quality checks on every single vehicle that leaves the plant. Not any more. Not even two thirds get the full treatment.
Mr Wakatsuki, who works in the in the machine press stamping section of the factory, said that cost-cutting and speed had become the dominant ethos at the expense of experience and thoroughness. "Top to toe" safety checks were no longer conducted on 100 per cent of cars, he alleged.
Even before reports had begun to surface about faulty accelerator pedals, Mr Wakatsuki believed that problems would eventually emerge to haunt Toyota. The company, he said, had allowed itself to grow too fast and in the process forgotten what it was that made its brand so strong. Those exact words were echoed last month by Akio Toyoda, the current Toyota president, when he apologised for mass recalls and attempted to explain how a company of Toyota’s calibre had got into such a mess.
The memo, by Mr Wakatsuki and five fellow members of the union, was written when Toyota was emerging from a criminal investigation into professional negligence over a car accident where five family members were injured. Toyota was cleared of all charges but Mr Wakatsuki and his collaborators demanded management provide a fuller explanation of what had happened.
As well as dwelling on numerous alleged shortcomings of Toyota’s management practices, the memo made seven requests. One of them demanded a review of cost reduction measures "so that the company can guarantee the manufacturing of safe cars".
Toyota acknowledged yesterday that senior management had seen the original memo, but deemed it appropriate to respond to only one of its requests – a polite suggestion that management look into ways of reducing the total number of hours worked by employees each year.
The carmaker remains in crisis after a global recall of nearly nine million vehicles, a growing barrage of litigation and allegations that accelerator faults caused the death of dozens of people on American roads.

The powerful earthquake that killed hundreds of people in Chile on Saturday probably shifted the Earth's axis and made days slightly shorter, a Nasa scientist has said.
Richard Gross, a research scientist at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, calculated how much the axis may have changed in position following the the disaster.
More than 700 people died and two million are estimated to have been affected by the 8.8-magnitude tremor and subsequent tsunamis.
The quake, the most powerful to hit the nation in 50 years, sent shockwaves out from the epicentre 70 miles from Chile's second city, Concepcion.
Buildings and roads collapsed and 500,000 homes have been left severely damaged.
Six aid workers died when a plane carrying them to Concepcion crashed.
The team was on its way to help organise accommodation for those left homeless by the disaster
Soldiers were sent to patrol Concepcion's streets after mobs set fire to shops and started looting them, hindering attempts to rescue survivors.
If the planet's axis did shift by 8cm during the quake, days would have shortened by 1.26 microseconds, Mr Gross calculated.
A microsecond is one-millionth of a second.
Earth days are 24 hours long because that is the amount of time it takes the planet to make one full rotation on its axis, so shifting the axis would affect rotation.
The quake shifted the Earth's axis by even more than the 9.1-magnitude tremor off Indonesia that started the deadly tsunami in Asia in 2004, according to Mr Gross.
This was partly because the fault line responsible for the quake in Chile "dips into Earth at a slightly steeper angle than does the fault responsible for the 2004 Sumatran earthquake", he said.
The different angle made Saturday's tremor more effective at moving Earth's mass vertically and shifting the planet's axis, Mr Gross continued.
The 2004 quake in Asia, which killed hundreds of thousands of people, caused the Earth to move by around 7cm.
It chopped an estimated 6.8 microseconds off the length of a day, Nasa said.

Speaking outside the television studio Jackson, 80, said: "He was murdered, my son was murdered, all I'm looking for is justice."
The Jackson family patriarch was in court in Los Angeles to see Murray face charges with the rest of his family including wife Katherine, sons Tito and Jermaine and daughter La Toya.
Michael Jackson died on June 25. His death was ruled a homicide by drug overdose.

Los Angeles prosecutors on Monday plan to file a criminal case in the death of Michael Jackson that is expected to include a charge of involuntary manslaughter against the singer's doctor.
The Los Angeles District Attorney's office said on Friday details of its case would be released on Monday, and gave no further details.
But sources close to the case said Dr. Conrad Murray, who has been under investigation for months, would be charged with the crime of unlawfully killing another person without malice or intent. If convicted, he faces up to four years in jail.
A criminal case against Murray was widely expected to be filed this week because he has been in Los Angeles meeting with his legal team, and his attorney Ed Chernoff said the Houston cardiologist would surrender himself voluntarily if charged.
As recently as Thursday, Chernoff issued a statement saying he and the Los Angeles district attorney were discussing booking and arraignment procedures.
But by Friday, media outlets reported that charges were delayed because of squabbling between police and prosecutors over how to handle Murray's arrest. Other reports said Chernoff balked when the district attorney demanded Murray be handcuffed and walked into a courthouse in front of TV cameras.
Chernoff's spokeswoman Miranda Sevcik told Reuters, "he (Chernoff) felt an arrest of Dr. Murray would be a waste of money, time and resources ... what the district attorney wanted I don't know. Our only request was to surrender Dr. Murray."
Los Angeles district attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said there was "no truth" to reports of feuding among police and the D.A. or over arrangements to take Murray into custody.
"We did not file a case today because the necessary paperwork has to be prepared," Gibbons said.

Jermaine Jackson, who with Michael was one of the members of Motown singing sensations The Jackson 5, told celebrity news television show "Entertainment Tonight" that his family was furious at the way the case was being handled.
I think he (Murray) should be cuffed, he should be fingerprinted, he should have his mugshot just like they did my brother," Jermaine said, referring to when Michael Jackson was arrested.
Murray was with "Thriller" singer Jackson when he died on June 25 and has admitted giving the 50-year-old pop star a dose of the powerful anesthetic propofol to help him sleep.
The Los Angeles coroner's office ruled that Jackson's death was a homicide, caused principally by propofol and the sedative lorazepam. A cocktail of other painkillers, sedatives and a stimulant were also found in his body.

Bulky mobile phone chargers could soon be a thing of the past with handsets running on soft drinks instead.
Daizi Zheng designed the 'greenphone', which is powered by Coca-Cola, as part of her final university project.
The Central Saint Martins graduate came up with the concept for Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia.
Ms Zheng said the prototype could run up to four times longer than a traditional lithium ion battery and has the potential to be fully biodegradable.
The greenphone's bio battery generates electricity using enzymes to catalyse sugar in the drink.
As the battery dies out, only water and oxygen are left behind.
Unfortunately, Nokia will not be developing the greenphone prototype further in the near future.
Ms Zheng told Sky News: "At the time they wanted something to bring out within the next two years and thought my design was too futuristic."
But she added that bio batteries are being developed by large electronics companies and may be on the market in the next five years.

Los Angeles police will present their case against Dr Conrad Murray to the District Attorney's office within weeks, the celebrity site said.
LAPD sources are quoted as saying Dr Murray will most likely face a charge of involuntary manslaughter which requires proof of gross negligence.
Jackson died suddenly last June, aged 50, at his LA home while under the care of Dr Murray.
The pop superstar had been due to launch a series of concerts at London's 02 Arena just days later.
Miranda Sevcik, a spokeswoman for Dr Murray, and his lawyer, Edward Chernoff, said he has no comment.
Both insisted the doctor had not prescribed or administered anything that should have killed Michael Jackson, according to the Associated Press news agency.
Authorities have apparently also lined up medical expert witnesses who will testify about the normal standard of care expected in a situation such as Jackson's, the source told AP.

Police filed the documents to support their request to search a Las Vegas pharmacy in August.
They provide new insight into what happened on June 25, when the 50-year-old "King of Pop" went into cardiac arrest and died.
They state that Jackson's physician Conrad Murray told authorities he administered the anaesthetic propofol after trying other medications to help Jackson sleep, and after Jackson's "repeated demands" for the drug.
Jackson went into cardiac arrest within 20 minutes of that injection, while Murray had stepped out to use the bathroom, the doctor told authorities a few days after the death.
By Murray's own account to police, he did not call for help until 12:22 pm, more than an hour after he realised Jackson was not breathing.
Telephone records show that Murray used his mobile phone for 47 minutes, with three different callers, from 11:18am to 12:05pm, a period during which the doctor said he was conducting CPR.
Murray did not mention this to the interviewing detectives, the documents state.
Police have not disclosed to whom they believe Murray spoke in those calls.
Police found medication bottles for at least eight different sedatives by Jackson's bed and around his home.
Dr Murray, 56, has not been charged with a crime, but the details in these documents show authorities were suspicious of his behaviour, even as they took Jackson to UCLA Medical Center to try to revive him.
Murray was asked to sign the death certificate but vanished from the hospital premises.
"Upon arrival at UCLA Medical Center, neither the coroner's investigators nor detectives could locate Murray to re-interview him," according to the documents.
Repeated attempts to contact him were unsuccessful.
Propofol is usually used in medical settings by anaesthesia professionals to render patients unconscious for surgery. Officials say it is not meant for use as a sleep agent.
However, the milky liquid drug is not regulated as a controlled substance in the US.

President Obama hails Senate health bill support

US President Barack Obama has welcomed the passage of his healthcare bill through the Senate, saying it paves the way for "real" reform.
The bill, which passed with 60 to 39 votes, aims to cover 31 million uninsured Americans.
This will be the most important piece of social legislation since Social Security passed in the 1930s," he said.
It must still be reconciled with similar legislation passed by the House of Representatives.
Mr Obama said: "We are now finally poised to deliver on the promise of real, meaningful health insurance reform that will bring additional security and stability to the American people."
He described the measures as "the toughest measures ever taken to hold the insurance industry accountable".
Among various reforms, Mr Obama said the insurance companies will no longer be able to deny coverage with a pre-existing condition nor end coverage when a person becomes ill.
"With today's vote, we are now incredibly close to making health insurance reform a reality in this country," the president said.
But he said it would be a challenge to "finish the job" of reform.
For the sake of our citizens, our economy and our future, let's make 2010 the year we finally reform healthcare in the United States of America."
The process of reconciling the two bills is expected to begin in January and will require further tough negotiations.
Once that has been done - and the process could still be derailed by last-minute changes of heart among senators - Mr Obama will be able to sign the measure into law.
The bill's passage in an early morning vote on Christmas Eve follows months of political wrangling and 24 days of debate in the Senate chamber.
Opposition Republicans say the legislation is expensive, authoritarian and a threat to civil liberties, and accuse the Democrats of rushing it through.

The Sums: George Miller's dystopian road flick isn't one that immediately springs to mind when debating most profitable films, but it actually loitered around the Guinness Book for a good long while.
Bringing in over $100m worldwide is - well, certainly WAS - a hugely impressive feat back in the day. Even more so when making it cost just $400k, Australian. That's probably about what James Cameron has earmarked for in-trailer slipper allowance on one of his shoots.
Why So Profitable? With its defiantly niche steampunk overtones, Antipodean roots and only a pre-fame Mel Gibson silhouetted on the 3-colour poster, it's hard to argue that it wasn't simply down to the film being, y'know, awesome. This one's a relatively rare case of a B-movie going global on merit alone. Hurrah.
Who Got Rich? George Miller raised the money for Mad Max by working as an Emergency Room Doctor. He raised the money for Mad Max 2 by asking Warner Brothers.
Though the film had a limited run in the United States and earned only $8 million there, it did very well elsewhere around the world and went on to earn $100 million worldwide.Since it was independently financed with a reported budget of just $400,000 AUD.
It was a major financial success. For thirty years, the movie held a record in Guinness Book of Records as the highest profit-to-cost ratio of a motion picture, conceding the record only in 2009 to Paranormal Activity. The film was awarded three Australian Film Institute Awards in 1979 (for editing, sound, and musical score).
Both New Zealand and Sweden initially banned the film.
George Miller was a medical doctor in Victoria, Australia, working in a hospital emergency room, where he saw many injuries and deaths of the types depicted in the movie. While in residency at a Melbourne hospital, he met amateur film maker Byron Kennedy at a summer film school in 1971. The duo produced the short film Violence in the Cinema, Part 1, which was screened at a number of film festivals and won several awards. Eight years later, the duo created Mad Max, with the assistance of first time screenwriter James McCausland (who appears in the film as the bearded man in an apron in front of the diner).
Miller believed that audiences would find his violent story to be more believable if set in a bleak, dystopic future. The film was shot over a period of twelve weeks in Australia, between December 1978 and February 1979, in and around Melbourne. Many of the car-chase scenes for the original Mad Max were filmed near the town of Lara, just north of Geelong. The movie was shot with a widescreen anamorphic lens, the first Australian film to use one.

The superstar's family are furious that Conrad Murray has reopened the clinic where he was working before becoming Jackson's full-time physician.
A family source revealed yesterday: "Five months have passed and there are still no charges despite all the evidence showing Murray is responsible for Michael's death.
Now he is being allowed to return to practising medicine. It's a disgrace."
Murray, 56, has returned to work in Houston, Texas, as his legal bills mount up.
The medic is suspected of giving 50-year-old Jacko a lethal dose of powerful anaesthetic propofol at his Los Angeles home on June 25.
Murray said the singer was reliant on it to sleep.
Propofol is normally only used to put patients under before operations.
Court documents show Murray had five bottles of the drug sent from a Las Vegas company to Los Angeles the month before Jackson's death.
Police admit there will be no charges until next year - if at all.
Jackson's angry family claim cops have ignored a dossier they have compiled that they insist could help lead to Murray's prosecution.
The source added: "The family are very unhappy with the LAPD and the pace of the investigation.
They have provided a list of people who were around Michael and Murray in his final days and could help prosecute the doctor, but most of them still have not been contacted."

Michael Jackson's famous white glove has been sold for £210,000 at a memorabilia auction, far exceeding pre-sale estimates.

The Jackson memorabilia was the highlight of an auction of hundreds of music items.
Darren Julien, CEO of Julien's Auctions, called the glove "the Holy Grail of Michael Jackson".
With added commission, the final price was around £250,000. The item had been given a pre-sale estimate of around £30,000.

The buyer was Hong Kong businessman Fossman Ma.

The black jacket that Jackson wore during the 1989 Bad tour was sold for £136,000, more than 20 times its estimate.

Other lots in the auction at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York's Times Square included a car driven by Jackson, David Bowie's guitar and memorabilia from the Beatles.

I never got to see Michael, and now that he's gone this is the closest I could get," said Jazmynn Moore, 19, a student from Manhattan.

The rhinestone-studded, modified golf glove was worn by Jackson when he first performed the moonwalk at the Motown 25th Anniversary concert in 1983.

Most of the 80 Jackson lots were items that came from friends and family to whom Jackson had given them, the auctioneer said.

Jackson was something of a collector himself, having paid around £1m for the Gone With the Wind best picture Oscar, one of the highest prices ever paid for memorabilia at auction.

The auction house had valued the Jackson collection at $80,000 to $100,000. But Julien said such pre-auction estimates were intentionally conservative to help generate interest.

Many of Jackson's items sold for 10 or even 20 times the estimates.

Julien's had been preparing for a huge auction of Jackson memorabilia in April that was cancelled after an agreement with Jackson, who had filed a lawsuit demanding the return of certain items.

During the promotion for that sale, Julien's had amassed a large database of Jackson collectors from Asia to the Americas, and many of the winning Internet bidders were from Japan or Hong Kong.

A meeting between director Danny Boyle and two 'Slumdog' stars' families in India has ended very badly.
Danny Boyle has been left frustrated by the cash demands from the parents of the child stars of Slumdog Millionaire.
The Oscar winning director and Slumdog Millionaire producer, Christian Colson, pledged to set up a trust fund for the education of two of the film's child stars - Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail - and also allocated £31,000 for new houses after their makeshift homes were torn down by the Mumbai government.
However, Boyle is reported to be stunned by fresh demands from the children's parents.
They claim the funds aren't enough to sustain the lifestyle they have become accustomed to following the success of the film, and a spokesperson for the family asked the Hindustan Time: "Where is the swimming pools and the bungalow?"
Boyle flew to India recently to setlle the dispute but was left frustrated after their meeting.
A spokesman for the trust set up for the child actors, Noshir Dadrawala, said, "We believe that the children are being badly advised. There are properties available located in nearby suburbs.
We have made many attempts to settle this but now Danny has said that if they don't agree by January, then the money will be given to other charities.

A futuristic robot passenger designed to alleviate the stress of driving has been unveiled by Audi.
Meet Aida, the brainchild of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), being developed with Audi possibly soon to appear in an A4 near you. Aida, an acronym of Affective Intelligent Driving Agent, is an in-car robot able to 'learn' things about you and your driving thanks to sensors inside and outside the car.
The idea is that Aida will, within a week or two, become a driving companion, learning where home is, where work is, where you like to shop, what you like to do and, bizarrely, what sort of mood you're in. As Professor Cynthia Breazeal, director of the Personal Robots Group at MIT, puts it: "AIDA [will] read the driver's mood from facial expression and other cues and respond in a socially appropriate and informative way."
Mounted on the dashboard, Aida (whose eyes look suspiciously like a row of Audi daytime running lights) will appear sympathetic if you look sad, or jolly if you look happy. Like a good satnav system, Aida will also suggest alternative routes when there are traffic problems, can also tell you where to get fuel when you're running low and how to drive in the most fuel efficient way relevant to the driving conditions at the time.
It's currently a research project, but as a working model has already been built there's no reason why we won't see it on an Audi options list in the near future.

The frozen Arctic Ocean will be an open sea during the summer 'by 2020', climate experts have warned.
The frozen Arctic Ocean will become an open sea during the summer within a decade, according to the latest data.
Climate change experts predict a massive melt which will see the ice cover completely disappear throughout the warmer months.
British polar explorer Pen Hadow led an expedition to collect the data behind the alarming prediction.
He told Sky News: "We were able to reach the areas the scientists can't get to. Our findings are depressing.
In just ten years or so 80-85 per cent of the Arctic Ocean will be ice free, and within twenty years we'll have completely lost the summer ice.
Hadow and the rest of the Catlin Arctic Survey team faced temperatures of down to minus 45C, and even had to swim part of the 450km journey.
Using giant drills they measured the depth and age of the Arctic ice.
Their results, the most recent gathered from the North Pole, show how the region is gradually disappearing.
Scientists at the University of Cambridge say it is "invaluable evidence".
Professor Peter Wadhams, head of the Polar Physics Group said: "Up until now we've always thought of the Arctic Ocean as a white lid on top of the planet.
But now that lid is being lifted and replaced with an open ocean which changes everything. It really is bad news.
As the ice disappears so too does its wildlife, from polar bears to walrus and seals.
Moreover, the Arctic sea ice has been described as earth's refrigerator, and as it melts, it is expected to have a major impact on the world climate.
Campaigners are taking this latest research to the Copenhagen climate conference in December in the hope that the evidence will convince world leaders to take action in cutting carbon emissions.
Ed Miliband, the Energy and Climate Change Secretary, said the findings set out the "stark realities of a rapidly changing climate" and "illustrated the risk of an ice free summer in the Arctic in the not-too-distant future".
This further strengthens the case for an ambitious global deal in Copenhagen in December which the UK is fully committed to achieving," he said.
Dr Martin Sommerkorn, from the WWF International Arctic Programme, warned there was "no time to lose".
Countries must see these results and think there is no alternative.

A light has been shone on one of the great mysteries of the internet. What is the point of the two forward slashes that sit directly infront of the “www” in every internet website address?
The answer, according to the British scientist who created the world wide web, is that there isn’t one.
Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who wrote the code that transformed a private computer network into the web two decades ago, has finally come clean about the about the infuriating // that internet surfers have cursed so frequently.
The physicist admitted that if he had his time again, he might have made a change, or more specifically, two.
“Really, if you think about it, it doesn’t need the //. I could have designed it not to have the //”, he said, speaking at a symposium on the future of technology in Washington DC last week.
Sir Tim ruefully explained that when he started devising the network almost 30 years ago he could not have predicted the hassle that has been caused by his small error in thinking about the way a web address is written.
Boy, now people on the radio are calling it ‘backslash backslash’, Sir Tim told his audience, even though he knows they are, in fact, forward slashes.
Showing them his index finger he added: “People are having to use that finger so much.”
He knows that no one has calculated the number of exasperated groans emitted at the sight of a “syntax error” message generated by the grave omission of a single slash.
Nor is there a figure on the number of occupational therapists kept in work treating repetitive strain injury caused by prodding the far right-hand button on the bottom row of a standard keyboard.

Suppose all the information stored on computers everywhere else were linked, he mused in his book, Weaving the Web.

Today the URLs — better known as web addresses — that Sir Tim created, beginning http://www, are familiar to anyone navigating their way around the internet.
Many have argued that he would have been awarded the Nobel prize had his discoveries had been spun out of traditional sciences.
Today, he is the director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees the web’s continued development.
Considering his achievements, maybe Sir Tim can be forgiven his double-slash mistake.
How was he to know that his interesting idea would cause the biggest revolution in communications since the creation of the printing press?
The error is characteristic of a restless man with big ideas that he wanted to implement quickly.
Colleagues at the CERN institute in Geneva where he developed his ideas asked him to speak in French instead of English in the hope of slowing down his torrent of words.
If he had eased up a little, maybe he would have spotted his error in thinking.
Although he acknowledges the mistake, he addresses it with a shrug of the shoulders.

A human X-ray machine which produces "naked" images of passengers has been introduced at Manchester airport.
It enables staff to instantly spot any hidden weapons or explosives.
The full body scanner which is being trialled will also show up any breast enlargements, false limbs, piercings, and a clear outline of passengers' private parts.
Bosses admit some travellers might not want to be scanned because of the graphic nature of the images. They can refuse to undergo the virtual strip search at Terminal 2, opting for the traditional "pat down" search instead.
The black and white image will only be seen by one officer in a remote location before it is deleted.
The scanner, made by the firm RapiScan Systems, makes the check-in process much quicker for passengers, who will not have to remove their coats, shoes or belts.

Husband for Sale A store that sells husbands has just opened in LONDON, where a woman may go to choose a husband.
Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates. You may visit the store ONLY ONCE!
There are six floors and the attributes of the men increase as the shopper ascends the flights.
There is, however, a catch. .... You may choose any man from a particular floor, or you may choose to go up a floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!
So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband...

On the first floor the sign on the door reads:
Floor 1 - These men have jobs and love the Lord.
The second floor sign reads:
Floor 2 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, and love kids.
The third floor sign reads:
Floor 3 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, and are extremely good looking.

A man mistook his fiancée for an intruder and shot her dead the day before their wedding.

A 'distraught' man has shot his fiancée dead the day before their wedding in a case of mistaken identity.
John Tabutt told police he seized his gun because he thought he heard someone in his Florida home.
Thinking his live-in partner was in bed, the 62-year-old fired at a figure in a dark hallway.
He discovered too late he struck Nancy Dinsmore, also 62, who he was due to marry the very next day.
Tabutt called 911 in the early hours of Friday, moaning and sobbing, according to local newspaper reports.
"I thought I had an intruder in the house," he told the emergency operator. "Honest to God, she looks dead."
A "distraught" Tabutt stood by while his fiancée was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, according to police.
He has not been charged with any offence and officers said everything pointed to a tragic accident.
The couple planned to wed in a small ceremony at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Florida's Winter Springs, Ms Dinsmore's son-in-law Scott Sposato told the Orlando Sentinel.
They loved each other," he said. "It was quite apparent."

Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage is reportedly struggling to stay afloat amid claims he owes $6m (about £3.7m) in unpaid taxes.
Celebrity gossip website TMZ reported that the movie star, famous for his roles in Con Air and Gone In 60 Seconds, is $6,257,005 in debt to the US Internal Revenue Service.
Now the IRS has placed a tax lien on the Hollywood actor's New Orleans properties after the actor failed to pay income tax on his wages dating back to 2007.
TMZ also reported that in addition to the Leaving Las Vegas star's income tax debt, he also owes the state money from three further years of unpaid debt.
The second lot of unpaid taxes relates to Cage's earnings between 2002 and 2004.
The website has published what it calls official documents showing how much Cage owes.
Last week it emerged that the 45-year-old had defaulted on a $2m (£1.2m) loan.
Cage was forced to sell off a Bavarian castle he owned in Germany earlier this year due to his financial troubles.

A soldier was branded "one lucky idiot" by comrades for cheating death three times during a stint in Afghanistan.

Private Daniel Britton, 22, from Nantwich, Cheshire, said he is fortunate to be alive after an action-packed six-month tour in Helmand Province.
He contracted dysentery after nearly drowning in a fast-flowing river, had a bullet brush past his head in an attack by the Taliban and was shot in the chest during a separate strike.
The soldier, from The 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment, had his first brush with death in April, just one month into his tour, when he was trying to cross a swollen river.
The current became too strong. It swept my feet from under me. I'm not much of a swimmer and I was washed underneath the water.
The weight of my kit made it very difficult to stay afloat. All that was going through my mind was 'I'm dying'," he said.
Private Britton's colleagues managed to pull him out, only for the soldier to be diagnosed with dysentery. And the former South Cheshire College pupil had only just recovered when the Taliban shot at his head and thought they had killed him.
It was very early morning in the patrol base and I was sat outside cleaning my weapon. All of a sudden several bullets whizzed past my head.
I yelled to everyone to 'stand to' and that began the start of a four-day contact. When I thought about it afterwards I realised how lucky I was to still to be here. I heard later that the Taliban thought they had killed a British soldier. I know that was me they were talking about," he said.
Private Britton's troubles were not over. He was within centimetres of death when the Taliban shot him in the chest, and the soldier was sure he was bleeding. But the bullet became lodged in his body armour, and the liquid on his skin turned out to be sweat.
He said: "The first I knew of the Taliban presence was when I was thrown back with massive force.
It was like a sledgehammer hitting my chest. I could feel liquid on my skin and I was convinced it was blood. It could have been a different story if it had landed a few centimetres to the right. The guy who had pulled me out of the water at the start of the tour was there this time too. He told me I was 'one lucky idiot'."
Private Britton admits he was relieved to reach his 22nd birthday but, even then, as he celebrated with friends at a fancy dress party in the patrol base, the Taliban fired a series of Chinese rockets in their direction.
